Sofia Villani Scicolone in Rome in 1934, Sofia Loren grew up dirt
poor in a town just outside of Naples (Southern Italy). Her family lived
near a munitions plant during WWII and Sofia was once caught in a raid,
getting struck in the chin with shrapnel. Always passionate about
acting, she appeared in her first film, La Favorita, in 1952. By 1962,
the poor girl from Naples had conquered Hollywood, winning the Academy
Award for Best Actress for her masterful performance in La Ciociara (or
Two Women, in English) and becoming the first actress to win an Oscar
for a non-English-speaking role. Sofia is renowned for her sexiness, but
unlike some movie stars of her era, she is strong and in control of her
sensuality. It was always hers, we just got to enjoy it. Her
confidence, more than her incredible talent, unique beauty, and
unabashed sexiness, makes her a true legend. Forza Sofia!
